Keep Calm and Study…Latin?

Veni, Vidi, Vici.

I came. I saw. I conquered.

latin

Julius Caesar’s famous words of victory to the Roman Senate still hold meaning for many students of today.

The ancient language of the Roman Empire has long been studied by academic scholars. But in recent years, Latin is seeing a resurgence among students of all ages and walks of life—and for good reason!

The study of Latin can make learning across all curriculums easier and more fluid. I studied Latin for 4 years in high school and took away much more knowledge than just how to wear a toga (yes, we had an actual toga party!). I can truthfully say I use my Latin background every day as an adult, not only in understanding and using complex vocabulary, but in my thought process and logic. But it also trained me in puzzle solving and patience (because that is really what it is like to translate a Latin text) and provided historical context for many modern sayings and witticisms. This is why my children studied it in high school. It’s why I have included the study of Latin roots in my most advanced high school writing class.

Benefits of Studying Latin

1. Improves vocabulary acquisition and the ability to decipher words in day to day reading.

2. Improves grammar through understanding the way sentences are put together and subject/verb agreement.

3. Sets a solid foundation for learning other languages.

4. Improves logic because it is constructed and understood much like a puzzle.

5. Provides a precursor to understanding current scientific and legal terminology for future study.

6. Provides a foundation for understanding history and the philosophy of government and art.

So, even if you are studying Latin solely to improve your SAT scores, rest assured that you will reap the benefits for years to come!
